In light of everything that’s happening in the world today, I’d be
remiss if I didn’t have a perspective to share.
Most people already know my take on religion, sexuality, politics and
equality for all of mankind, so I won’t bore you. I’ll just say this: We are complex human beings. We have different perspectives on a plethora
of beliefs. There could be four close
friends sitting together, and when they hear the news that the Supreme Court
had upheld the Affordable Care Act aka Obamacare for the SECOND time, they are
all ecstatic. After all, with over 16.5
million people enrolled, reverting to having no insurance at all would not have
been a viable option for them.
When Hillary Clinton was the only Democrat who threw her hat in
the ring, many people were looking forward to having the first female president of the
United States. Next thing, Senator
Bernie Sanders (I), from Vermont joined her along with Lincoln Chafee and Martin
O'Malley. Chafee is a bit on the queer
side; O’Malley is a bit on the plain side.
They’ll drop out soon. But Bernie
is the ultimate underdog. An independent
socialist who actually believes in free college and is opposed to wars in general,
did a sneak attack on the former Secretary of State. Three of the friends can relate to Bernie’s ideologies,
but there is one who is just intent on us having our first female
president. Next thing you know, everyone
else is looking at her with the side eye.
How could she back any Clinton, with how much baggage they travel with?
After agreeing to disagree, the topic of a certain bigot running
for the Republican Party surfaced. I’m
sure everyone can agree that no one in their right mind will take Donald Trump
seriously. Not so fast! There is always one person who can see that
although the Donald is an idiot, they like the fact that he speaks his mind;
that he touches on issues that concern most people; and that he is a shrewd
businessman who can turn this economy around.
Unfortunately, there is always someone who will be blind to someone’s
true nature. I won’t go into details
about the fact that it’s easy for him to speak his mind because there isn’t
much there, or that most of his concerns are based on prejudice and
bigotry, or that he is not that great of a businessman having filed for
bankruptcy so many times, or that Obama has already made great strides in
turning around the broken economy left by Baby Bush. To each his own.
As if enough crap is not happening, racists are burning down Black
churches and killing Black people praying in Black churches as if it’s
1799. I’m sure all four can agree that there
is a miscarriage of justice occurring when the media claim that some of these
fires are accidental or that there is not enough evidence to prove arson or that anyone has yet to be charged.
Well, burning churches will not be tolerated by anyone, but when the
Supreme Court decided 5-4 that same-sex couples had the right to marry
nationally, all hell broke loose.
Suddenly, your best friend who sided with you that Donald Trump is the BIGGEST ASS alive could not find it in
her heart to agree that Adam and Steve should be granted the same rights as
a man and a woman. The same people who
condone adultery in their own marriage, just could not find it in their hearts
to condone someone else’s same-sex marriage. The same people who had no problems violating
some of the Ten Commandments started pointing out the sinfulness of gay sex,
even though it is not even in the top ten, where commandments are concerned. And now close friends are beginning to wonder
how they could have been so blind. They
cannot comprehend that someone could lack such morals. They cannot believe that their best friend is
willing to fight for the right for men (because people don’t fret too much
about lesbian sex) to lie together. Are
they not aware that it’s in the Bible?
And it doesn’t matter that they are going to use scriptures from said
Bible to prove that the Bible is true – it’s in there,
and that is all you need to know. They are
not concerned that Abraham was married to his half-sister who gave him her maid
to bear a child because she was barren, and after she was “blessed” with a
child of her own, drove the maid and Abraham’s first born out of the household. Come to think of it, no one ever remembers Ishmael;
it’s all about Isaac, who is technically the second child; but that is neither
here nor there. They are not concerned
that Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines.
That is not important. What’s
important is that same-sex marriage defies “traditional marriage”.
I could argue my opinions, but I’ve decided that it’s not worth it
and not because I don’t want to be that snarky friend who years from now gives
someone the ‘I told you so’ look. I’m certainly
not too modest for that. I’m not going
to respond with ‘let’s agree to disagree’ because quite frankly, it’s okay to
disagree and to disagree with passion.
We are complex individuals, and it’s okay to possess varying ideologies;
but perspectively speaking, the only reason why I’m keeping my opinions to
myself (smile if you see the irony) is because with everything that’s going on
in the world today, only one thing can help us all – LOVE!
Well said. People tend to not see their own hypocrisies, particularly "church folks!"
